How to set up MetaTrader 5 on a VPS

Step 1
Order a Windows VPS near your broker and log in with Remote Desktop.
Step 2
Download MetaTrader 4 or 5 from your broker's website and install it.
Step 3
Log in to your trading account and copy your Expert Advisors into the MQL folder.
Step 4
Turn on AutoTrading, and put MetaTrader in the Startup folder so it opens by itself after a restart.
What to do in the first hour
- Change the Administrator password to a long one you do not use anywhere else.
- Run Windows Update and let the server restart.
- If your home IP never changes, allow Remote Desktop only from your IP (in Windows Firewall).
- Keep a copy of important files somewhere else, regularly — a VPS is not a backup.

What are the Forex VPS requirements?
Start with 2 processor cores (vCore) and 4 GB memory (RAM) for 1–2 MetaTrader windows. One or two MT4 or MT5 windows run well on 2 processor cores (vCPU) and 4 GB memory (RAM). Add about 1 GB more for each extra MetaTrader. Charts and indicators use the most memory.
How do I set up MetaTrader 5 on a VPS?
1) Order a Windows VPS near your broker and log in with Remote Desktop. 2) Download MetaTrader 4 or 5 from your broker's website and install it. 3) Log in to your trading account and copy your Expert Advisors into the MQL folder. 4) Turn on AutoTrading, and put MetaTrader in the Startup folder so it opens by itself after a restart.
Where should a forex VPS be?
As close to your broker's server as you can, not close to you. Most European brokers are in London, Frankfurt or Amsterdam. Most US brokers are in New York. Ask your broker which city their server is in. You can also check the ping inside MT4.
Will my Expert Advisors keep working when my PC is off?
Yes, that is the whole point. MetaTrader runs on the server, not on your computer. So your robots keep trading during power cuts, laptop restarts and home internet problems. Set MetaTrader to start by itself, in case the server restarts for updates.
Windows or Linux — which should I choose?
Windows, because this job uses Windows programs you open with Remote Desktop. You can switch to Linux later from your control panel if you need to.
Do I get full admin access?
Yes. Every plan gives you full control (Administrator on Windows, root on Linux). You can install and set up anything this job needs. The server is yours for as long as you have paid.
Is it managed or self-managed?
